An international conference "Thomas Graham Jackson in Istria and Dalmatia” is being held to mark the 130th anniversary of the publication of Jackson’s pioneering book. Dalmatia, the Quarnero and Istria, with Cettigne in Montenegro and the island of Grado by T. G. Jackson (Oxford, 1887) was ground-breaking in many ways, and still has a significant influence on the perception of medieval and renaissance art and urbanism in the Adriatic. This capital work by one of the most prominent British Victorian architects, and also an exceptional painter, is one of the most important travelogues through Croatian regions not only as a written source, but also as an invaluable collection of visual material.
The overall aim of the conference is to bring together scholarly research related to the Jackson’s work in all aspects: from his book itself, to his architectural and restoration work in the context of the Eastern Adriatic coast, and finally, the influence of Jackson’s recording and understanding of the area and its monuments on the development European architecture and historiography.
We would like to invite therefore, scholars and research from many disciplines – art historians, literature historians, historians, architecture historians, and theorists and experts from cognate disciplines – to contribute to the research into the role of T. G. Jackson’s work in all its aspects.
