Yugoslavia 1989: Two and a Half Stories about Art and International Cultural Relations
At the invitation of the Archive of the Cetinje Biennials, Dr. Sanja Sekelj delivered a public lecture entitled “Yugoslavia 1989: Two and a Half Stories about Art and International Cultural Relations” on 12 June 2026 at the Petrović Castle in Podgorica.
Drawing on research into the origins of the Cetinje Biennial, the lecture focused on the year 1989 in order to examine Yugoslavia’s international cultural connections immediately prior to its dissolution. Through the example of the exhibition Yugoslav Avant-Gardes (France, 1989–1990) and the federal cultural policy towards Europe, the Soviet Union, and the countries of the Non-Aligned Movement, the lecture demonstrated how contemporary art and international cultural cooperation functioned as part of a complex infrastructure of internationalism.
The participation is a result of work on the project “Digital network, spatial, and (con)textual analysis of artistic phenomena and heritage of the 20th century – DIGitART,” led by Dr Sanja Horvatinčić, that is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and being carried out at the Institute of Art History from 2023 to 2027.
