Phenomena of Croatian artistic modernity
About the project
The project starts from modernity as a qualitative term that names social processes and phenomena inherent to the epoch of the "long" 19th and "short" 20th century, and is focused on its articulation in the sphere of art. As such, the research envisaged by the project is not limited exclusively to the cultural and artistic formations of Croatian so-called first modernity, and modernism, but includes a wider range of artistic phenomena and processes in which it is manifested, that is, through which the overall social modernity is reproduced. The emphasis, therefore, will not only be on artistic phenomena that belong to the modern epoch, but on the consideration of the specific connections between these artistic phenomena and their overall (not exclusively stylistic) determinations, based on which they identify themselves as modern – artistic-critical speech about them, intertextual connections with literature and other cultural formations, political and ideological discourse. All specific i.e. the individual topics of dealing with the project are therefore permeated by the question: how artworks and art formations and visual media establish modernity as their own context and horizon of meaning, which is not simply set, but is re-actualized and differentiated in each individual realization.
The research will be carried out in four thematic units: (1) media innovation and visual culture; (2) art and modernity; (3) institutionalization of art; (4) the development of the modern city.
